This Song: El Único

This Song is a monthly feature of So Much Stuff, offering a snippet of association to who and where I was when it was a popular release or otherwise entered my radar.

I’d like to think of myself as the sort of person who regularly follows NPR’s Tiny Desk concerts. But the truth is I only stumble upon them when searching for something else on YouTube or scrolling through Instagram.

Be that as it may, I came across a 15-second clip of Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso singing “El Único,” and I could not get enough. This song—like most of the songs in their full 17+ minute video from El Tiny, a month-long Latin takeover of the Tiny Desk series—is explicitly sexual. Downright dirty, really, but at the same time highlighted by a keen and yearning regret:

Yo acá pensando que era el único
I'm here thinking I was the only one

Pero algo me dice que ya no, bebé
But something tells me not anymore, baby

“El Único” starts at about 3:08. But the whole concert is just so dang good. Give a listen. It will funk you up. Also: those guys!! Apparently friends since they were 6 years old.
