Last year, after this video made its way into my feed, I was inspired to build a bug snug of my own. Except I started late in the season, with yard scraps hard to come by at that point, so I had to forage at the park, and I’m not sure how many insects found a safe winter harbor beyond the ground beetles that sheltered below the pile of debris.
This year I started early, and the snug includes the dried out sunflowers from the book launch of A New Day, the copious hydrangea blossoms resulting from an especially mild winter, and the stalks and husks of many cornflowers I hope will have seeded themselves come spring. There’s probably not enough sun at that end of the yard for them to thrive, but we’ll see.
I can’t remember the last time I watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, but in the early 80s, when I waited tables on the Upper West Side, it was de rigueur to drink at another restaurant, farther down on Columbus Avenue, where we could watch the slow inflation of Bullwinkle and other giant character balloons. I can’t summon up the name of that place, but can still recall the great smell and taste of their round crinkle-cut fries.
This is wonderful, Sue, and I love the photos. ☀️❤️
